IE Update from Portugal
Written on March 19, 2012 by William Pacheco in Events, IE Updates, News, Portugal
IE has been busy in Portugal and this three part update begins with a conference at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Lisbon with Professor Rafael Pampillón.
On the 30th Jan. Rafael Pampillon presented “Outlook for global economy in 2012, with a special focus on the European Economy” at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Lisbon. Professor Pampillon presented that the current adverse economic situation and the significant geostrategic changes ocurring in emerging markets are changing the patterns of the economic and financial context and penalizing Iberian economies. These emerging markets are destinated to play an important role in the European economy. Through the tourism sector, imports and by buying sovereign debt, countries like China, Vietnam, India or Brazil have the opportunity to help restore confidence in the European markets but also to be proclaimed as the great victors of this crisis.

Nova University students from Lisbon visit IE!
Written on February 6, 2012 by William Pacheco in Events, Portugal
On January 11th IE hosted a group of 30 students from Nova University in Lisbon. They come to Madrid each year to visit important companies and be close to the market. It was their third visit at the IE Campus! Nora and I organized for them a Campus Tour, a cocktail with current students from Portugal, but the star of the program was a Creativity and Innovation workshop run by Professor Hana Milanov.
Hana joined IE’s Entrepreneurship Faculty in 2007 upon finishing her doctoral studies in Entrepreneurship and Strategy at Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. Her research bridges these two disciplines through a special interest in social networks. Relying on a diverse set of teaching resources, she encourages a discussion-based learning experience with the final goal of developing students’ critical skills and new perspectives on the course material. The students, along with their tutor, Daniel Traça, greatly enjoyed the session! Taking them out from their natural environment let them discover their hidden potential and stimulated them a lot!
Thank you so much for your amazing workshop! It was a really valuable experience You really make the difference on the way I see things, and on the way I look to new problems and challenges. I am much more creative/innovative than I thought. I will keep developing it, because nowadays being innovative is definitely a key success factor in our lives (not just at work)!, wrote Tiago after coming back to Lisbon.
Thank you! Receiving such a note is the best gratification you can ever get!

IE: Supporting Female Professionals in Times of Crisis
Written on October 11, 2011 by shaheen.samavati in Events, News, Portugal, Women in Business
With the economic crisis in the Euro zone reaching its climax, women should be twice as concerned about their professional future than their male counterparts. Research has shown that in times of economic depression women are the first to lose their jobs and, when macroeconomic recover takes place again, they are the last ones to be hired by companies. Furthermore, the crisis also puts a halt to women’s goals to reduce barriers to their way to the top.
Internationally renowned as one of top leading management institutions and a think-tank for innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability, IE is aware of the problem and is launching several projects and initiatives to help professional women to make it to the boardroom.
“To foster women in business has been one of IE’s main goals for the past 20 years, therefore we have accumulated a great deal of knowledge to help women in this period of great concern”, says Deise Leobet, IE’s International Development Director for Europe and CIS. Mrs. Leobet will be coordinating the discussions of the European Professional Women (EPWN) and IE Conference that will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, next November 3rd.
Among the pro-women initiatives being carried on by IE, is the creation of special funding/financial opportunities for young and high-potential female professionals, the creation of mentoring programs to help them to pursue opportunities in different areas and industries, especially in times of crisis when innovation and entrepreneurial spirit is a must, as well as a research center focus on women issues to reduce the so-called gender gap.
