Simply Seven

Simply Seven by Erik Schlie

Erik Schlie, IE Business School’s Associate Dean and Professor of Marketing and General Management, has teamed up with Jörg Rheinboldt and Niko Waesche to write Simply Seven, a practical guide to Internet business for students, entrepreneurs and executives.

The name of the book is derived from the idea that there are seven business building blocks which form the foundation of all Internet business models. Chapter by chapter, the book guides the reader through the lessons learned by each business module: Skype for services, Blizzard Entertainment for subscriptions, Amazon.com for retail, Google for advertising, eBay for commissions and Apple for license sales.

Student Perspective: Liviu Nedef, Romania

Written on November 30, 2011 by shaheen.samavati in News, Romania, Student Perspectives

Liviu Nedef

Liviu Nedef, a student in the April 2011 intake of the International MBA, shares his experiences so far at IE Business School in Madrid.

Why did you decide to do an MBA at this stage of your career?

I decided to do an MBA because I wanted to get a better understanding of business. A good MBA should be designed in such a way to allow you to develop your career to its fullest potential and at an accelerated pace, that’s what I signed up for. Don’t get me wrong, I was enjoying my job prior to the MBA, but my tasks and knowledge were very focused and I knew that an MBA would give me a broader view of business.

How do you think your MBA will contribute to your success?

I think first of all it will diversify my skills set and allow me to position myself  better in the tough job market we face nowadays. An MBA helps you see the big picture and at the same time understand the details of the day-to-day challenges one has to deal with in the real business world. I am also confident it will help me open new doors for more responsibility.

How would you describe IE culture?

One of the things IE is best known for is the incredible cultural diversity of its students and I really wanted to be a part of this type of international learning experience: in my class of 50 students there are more than 30 nationalities and you can benefit from each of your colleagues’background and experience. You can also get really cool advice for places to visit or new food to try!

IE Business School is collaborating with the organizers of the Changellenge Moscow Cup, which began on November 20th and will culminate with the final competition on December 12th.  The project brings together some of the brightest future leaders, and is great chance for IE to meet potential students for the Master in International Management program.

IE will be participating in the Changellenge Competition in several ways. In addition to Dr. David Bach’s Master Class on Strategy Beyond the Market scheduled to take place on December 1st at 18:00 in Moscow High School of Economics, IE representatives will also be meeting with semi-finalists and top contestants at invite-only events to learn more about their professional objectives and their potential to come to IE Business School for master-level study.  As part of IE’s commitment to the Changellenge Competition, two candidates who’ve managed to show top results throughout the competition and who’ve obtained admissions to IE Business School, will be awarded a sizeable scholarship.  There is one scholarship of 30% of tuition fees, and a second of 50% of tuition fees.

Competition contestants who will be participating in the Changellenge Competition and who wish to be considered for one of the scholarships, must have submitted to their admissions application to IE Business School no later than 10 March, 2011.  For support on applying to IE, contact IE’s Moscow Office via email at Russia@ie.edu.

We wish all Changellenge Competition contestants the best of luck.

David Bach

On November 8th, 2011, approximately 60 young professionals, including 25 Zurich-based alumni members and 35 candidates participated in a lively IE Master Class Session at the Marriott Hotel in Zurich. The class was led by David Bach, Professor of Strategy and Economic Environment and Dean of MBA Programs at IE.

David Bach, IE professor of strategy and economic environment

This particular session titled: “Creating Competitive Advantage Beyond the Market” addressed and analyzed the fact that nowadays companies and their bottom lines are increasingly affected by government policy, changing regulations, activist pressure and media scrutiny. A lively discussion ensued and many participants gave their opinions and insights into how can and/or should companies respond to these growing “nonmarket” pressures.

Towards the end of the evening all candidates left with a better idea of MBA class dynamics, while IE alumni were given the opportunity to reminisce about their time as an IE student and reconnect with fellow classmates.

Check out this new official IE video that highlights the resources and opportunities in entrepreneurship available to students at IE Business School. Entrepreneurship is considered one of the core values at IE. Indeed, we were founded by entrepreneurs in 1973, so it is part of who we are. Students are given every opportunity to pitch their ideas and business plans to a number of international venture capital firms and business angels during their programs. In fact, we’ll be hosting the IE Venture Days this week, where we will welcome a host of guest speakers as well as have our students present their ideas to representatives from, among others, Accenture, European Investment Fund and Vitamina K. To learn more about entrepreneurship opportunities at IE, visit entrepreneurship.ie.edu.
